Physical Education

Intent:

At Camps Hill, our intent is that every child has the opportunity to learn, move and grow through a high‑quality Physical Education curriculum. We aim to inspire all pupils to lead active, healthy lives and to develop the physical competence, confidence and enjoyment required to participate in a wide range of sports and physical activities.

Our PE curriculum is taught through a spiral, progressive approach, ensuring that skills are revisited, deepened and applied as children move through the school.

In the Early Years, pupils focus on developing core gross motor skills through engaging activities aligned with the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. These early experiences lay secure foundations for future learning.

In Key Stage 1, children broaden their range of fundamental movement skills, developing balance, coordination, agility and basic techniques that prepare them for increasingly structured sporting activities. By Key Stage 2, pupils refine and apply these skills within more complex games, sports and competitive situations, building resilience, teamwork and tactical awareness.

A key principle of our curriculum is that children are physically active for most of each lesson. We recognise the importance of regular movement for improving physical health, mental wellbeing and overall fitness, and we promote positive attitudes towards lifelong participation in physical activity.

Our aim is for all pupils to leave Camps Hill with the skills, knowledge and motivation to continue being active, confident and healthy individuals both in and beyond their primary school years.

Implementation:

Early Years

The foundation stage framework is used to create the curriculum for the Early Years, which includes preschool. Young children will acquire gross motor abilities by participating in more extensive play, and fundamental movements.

Ks1 and Ks2

Using Get set 4 PE, KS1 pupils will study broader sport skills at an advanced level. Every half term, there will be two topics, giving pupils a total of twelve topics per year. By year 2, they will have had more experience in some sports linking to movement such as dance and gymnastics.

In KS2, pupils will largely focus on sportsexcept for some additional skill-based topics in years 3 and 4. Pupils will use their previous skill-based learning and apply it to the sport they are playing. Additionally, Pupils will take swimming classes in years 4 and 5.
Additionally, Camps Hill offers a wide range of sporting opportunities throughout the year through its sporting wow events (sports day, themed events), sport clubs, inter, and intra competitions.

How we measure impact:

Teachers will use end of unit assessment to gather evidence to make an end of year judgement. It will be recorded on Arbor stating whether pupils are working towards, at or above the age-related expectations.
